GPT-4o prompt examples
Four practical prompts to try with GPT-4o
Useful prompts set a goal, give relevant context, and say what kind of response you need. Copy these examples, replace the bracketed details, and refine the answer with a specific follow-up.

1. Draft a message in your voice
Use this when you know what you mean but need help finding a clear tone. Include the audience, purpose, and constraints. Avoid pasting confidential details that are not needed.
Prompt: “Help me write a [email/text/note] to [audience]. I need to say [main point]. Keep it [tone], under [length], and preserve these facts: [facts]. Do not add promises or details I have not provided. Give me one draft and then list anything you had to assume.”
Follow-up: “Keep the first sentence. Make the request clearer, and soften the last line without making it apologetic.” Naming what should stay and what should change helps you guide the revision without starting over.
2. Learn a concept one step at a time
Ask for an explanation at your current level and build in a check for understanding. This can make a dense topic easier to explore, but verify facts against your course material or another trusted source.
Prompt: “I am learning [topic] and already understand [what you know]. Explain [specific concept] in plain language using one concrete example. Then give me one short question to check my understanding. Wait for my answer before explaining the solution.”
Follow-up: After you try the question, say “Tell me which part of my reasoning works and where it goes off track. Give me a hint before showing a full solution.” This turns the chat into a paced explanation instead of asking for a long answer all at once.
3. Make a realistic plan
A plan is only useful if it respects your time and constraints. Provide the deadline, available blocks, and what matters most. Ask for assumptions rather than letting missing information turn into invented commitments.
Prompt: “Help me plan [goal] by [date]. I can spend [time] on it on [days]. The most important outcome is [priority], and these constraints matter: [constraints]. Break the work into steps that fit those time blocks. Mark dependencies and ask me about any missing detail that would change the schedule.”
Follow-up: “I lost [time] this week. Rework the plan around the same deadline and tell me what to defer first.” Check that the revised plan still fits your real commitments before following it.
4. Review a code snippet
Paste the smallest relevant text snippet, the exact error, what you expected, and what happened. Remove keys, tokens, passwords, customer data, and other secrets first. Fouro is a text chat: it can reason about code you paste, but it cannot run the program or inspect your repository.
Prompt: “Review this [language/framework] snippet for the cause of [error or unexpected behavior]. Expected: [expected]. Actual: [actual]. Explain the most likely cause, identify what evidence in the snippet supports it, and suggest the smallest change to try. If the snippet is not enough, ask for the next useful detail. Do not claim you ran the code. [paste snippet]”
Follow-up: “Here is the result after that change: [result]. What does it rule out, and what should I inspect next?” Run suggested changes in your own environment and check them against the surrounding code and tests.
Make each prompt easier to answer
- State the intended result before listing background details.
- Include only context that affects the answer, and label uncertain facts.
- Specify useful limits such as audience, length, format, or time available.
- Ask one follow-up at a time when you are refining a response.
- Check important, current, or high-stakes claims with reliable sources.
