How to get more useful answers from GPT-4o
A good conversation usually starts with a clear goal and enough context. These practical patterns help with writing, learning, planning, and open-ended questions.

Start with the outcome you want
Say what you are trying to do and what a helpful answer should look like. “Help me write a short, friendly reply declining Friday's invitation” gives clearer direction than “write a reply.” Add relevant details such as audience, tone, length, or format. Leave out private information that is not needed for the task.
Give context, then set boundaries
Include the facts the answer depends on, and identify limits. For example: “Plan three vegetarian dinners for two people. Each should take under 30 minutes and use ordinary grocery ingredients.” If a detail is uncertain, say so. You can ask the model to list assumptions before it makes a recommendation.
Use follow-up questions to shape the answer
You do not need to get every instruction right on the first try. Ask for a simpler explanation, a different tone, a shorter version, or a comparison of options. Point to the part that needs work: “Keep the opening, but make the last paragraph more direct.” This gives the conversation a concrete next step.
For learning, ask for steps and practice
Name your current level and ask for one concept at a time. You might say, “Explain compound interest with a small example, then give me a practice question without the answer.” When working through a problem, ask the model to show its method and flag any assumptions so you can inspect the result.
For writing, share the draft and preserve your intent
Tell GPT-4o what the text is for, who will read it, and what should stay unchanged. Ask for edits with a specific purpose, such as improving clarity or reducing repetition. Read the result carefully and restore any nuance or facts that the revision missed.
Check answers that matter
Language models can make mistakes, including confident mistakes. Verify important facts with reliable primary sources, especially for current events, health, legal, financial, or safety decisions. Treat generated text as a starting point, and use qualified help when a decision requires professional judgment.
